The Shwedagon Pagoda stands as Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist site, its massive golden stupa covered in thousands of gold plates and topped with precious gems. The temple complex features dozens of smaller stupas, ornate pavilions, and shrines surrounding the main zedi in a sprawling courtyard of polished marble.
Visitors and monks walk across the geometric-patterned terrace, their shadows cast by the intense midday sun. The brilliant gold of the stupa contrasts sharply against the deep blue Myanmar sky, while white cumulus clouds drift overhead.
This 2,500-year-old pagoda houses relics of four previous Buddhas and remains an active pilgrimage destination, representing the pinnacle of Burmese temple architecture and spiritual devotion.
