The Shwedagon Pagoda stands as Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist site, its massive golden stupa covered in thousands of gold plates and topped with precious gems. The complex features dozens of smaller stupas, shrines, and ornate pavilions arranged across a marble terrace where devotees and visitors gather.
Built over 2,500 years ago according to legend, the pagoda has been rebuilt and expanded by successive kings and dynasties, each adding layers of gold and architectural splendor. The main stupa's bell-shaped form is a masterpiece of Burmese religious architecture.
Visitors remove their shoes before walking the cool marble floors, joining monks and pilgrims in clockwise circumambulation of the sacred structures. The site remains an active place of worship and one of Southeast Asia's most important pilgrimage destinations.
