Ancient Layers of History

This panoramic view captures the Roman Theatre of Málaga, constructed during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BCE. The semicircular stone seating tiers rise toward the hillside crowned by the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress built centuries later.

Archaeological Discovery

Discovered in 1951 during construction work, the theatre remained buried for centuries beneath what locals called 'The Castle Quarry.' Today, visitors walk among the restored cavea and orchestra, tracing the footsteps of Roman citizens who once gathered here for performances.

Modern Málaga

Contemporary buildings and palm trees frame the ancient ruins, illustrating how Málaga layers its 2,800-year history within a vibrant modern city. The site serves as a gateway to understanding the successive civilizations that shaped Andalusia.
