The Last Caravan Stop
Khiva's Itchan Kala stands as one of the most complete examples of a Central Asian Muslim fortress-town, its sand-colored walls rising from the Kyzylkum Desert like a mirage. This walled city was the last resting place for caravans crossing the desert before continuing to Persia.
Architecture of the Silk Road
The skyline reveals centuries of Islamic architecture: the stubby Kalta Minor minaret, left unfinished in 1855; the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa; and numerous domed mausoleums. Each structure bears the distinctive turquoise and blue tiles that define the region's aesthetic.
