Rossio Square has served as Lisbon's main public gathering space since the Middle Ages, witnessing everything from royal celebrations to revolutionary movements. The distinctive波浪-patterned calçada portuguesa pavement was laid by hand using traditional techniques dating back centuries.
The towering Corinthian column at the square's center honors Dom Pedro IV, who was also Brazil's first emperor, symbolizing the historic ties between Portugal and its former colony. The bronze statue atop the 27-meter column represents the emperor as a peacemaker.
Every May, jacaranda trees transform the plaza into a purple canopy, creating one of Lisbon's most photogenic moments as golden hour light filters through the blossoms while locals and tourists mingle around the neoclassical fountain.
