Mehrangarh Fort stands as one of India's largest and most impressive fortresses, its massive red sandstone walls rising 125 meters above the plains of Jodhpur. Built around 1459 by Rao Jodha, the fort complex features seven gates and numerous courtyards adorned with intricate latticework and arched windows.
From the fort's elevated position, visitors gaze upon Jodhpur's iconic Blue City, where houses painted in distinctive blue hues stretch across the arid landscape. The blue coloring traditionally identified Brahmin neighborhoods and provided natural cooling.
The fort's architecture showcases Rajput military engineering combined with ornate decorative elements, including jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies) and detailed stone carvings that demonstrate the craftsmanship of medieval Indian artisans.
