The ancient fishing village of Varkala comes alive at dusk as local fishermen return with their catch from the Arabian Sea. Traditional wooden boats, painted in vibrant blues and yellows, line the golden sands that have welcomed seafarers for centuries.
The 2,000-year-old port town, perched on laterite cliffs, offers one of Kerala's most dramatic coastal landscapes where red earth meets turquoise waters. Palm groves sway in the ocean breeze while the setting sun casts warm amber light across the beach.
Varkala remains one of the few places in southern India where cliffs are found in close proximity to the Arabian Sea, creating a unique geological formation known as the Varkala Formation, notified as a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India.
