Nigatsu-dō, or February Hall, is a prominent structure within the UNESCO World Heritage Tōdai-ji temple complex in Nara. Built in the 8th century, this sacred Buddhist hall derives its name from the Shuni-e ritual performed during the second lunar month.
The elevated wooden structure showcases classic Japanese temple architecture with its distinctive irimoya roof, deep eaves, and raised veranda. Stone lanterns (tōrō) line the stone staircase approach, creating a spiritual pathway for pilgrims and visitors.
October in Nara brings autumn colors and occasional rain, as evidenced by the wet stone courtyard. The overcast sky provides soft, diffused lighting that enhances the serene atmosphere of this 1,200-year-old sacred site.
