The remote town of Mestia sits nestled in Georgia's Greater Caucasus Mountains, where medieval stone tower houses punctuate the green hillsides. These distinctive Svan towers, built between the 9th and 13th centuries, served as both dwellings and defensive fortifications during times of tribal conflict.
The Mulakhura River cuts through the valley floor, its glacial waters creating white rapids as they flow from the high peaks toward the Black Sea. Dense pine forests cloak the surrounding mountains, part of the pristine wilderness that makes Upper Svaneti a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This landscape represents one of the Caucasus region's most culturally significant regions, where ancient traditions persist alongside modern mountain tourism. Mestia serves as the gateway to trekking routes leading to Ushguli and the foot of Georgia's highest peak, Mount Shkhara.
