Ancient Sacred Architecture
This dagoba represents the distinctive Sinhalese Buddhist architectural tradition that flourished during Polonnaruwa's golden age (11th-13th centuries). The hemispherical dome, called a 'garbha', houses sacred relics and symbolizes the dome of heaven in Buddhist cosmology.
Weathering as History The peeling white plaster reveals the passage of nearly 900 years, with tropical monsoons and humidity creating the distinctive patina visible across the dome's surface. The moss-covered brick structures at the base are remnants of the original vahalkada (entrance pavilions).
