The Cultural Heart of Riga along the City Canal
Standing in Opera Park (Bastejkalns Park) along the tranquil waters of the Riga City Canal (Pilsētas kanāls), this panoramic view captures two of Riga's most beloved landmarks in one frame.
To the right rises the imposing neoclassical facade of the Latvian National Opera (Latvijas Nacionālā opera), originally designed by architect Ludwig Bohnstedt and inaugurated in 1863 as the First German Theatre. Restored to grand splendor, it serves as the beating heart of classical opera and ballet in the Baltic states.
In the foreground along the paved walkway stands the life-sized bronze Monument to George Armitstead, created by sculptor Andris Vārpa and unveiled in 2006 by British Queen Elizabeth II and Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. Armitstead, Riga's legendary Mayor from 1901 to 1912, is depicted walking alongside his wife Cecile and their loyal Chow-Chow dog—a golden-snouted local mascot rubbed for good fortune by residents and visitors alike. To the left, the cast-iron Timma pedestrian bridge arches gracefully over the canal towards the University of Latvia.
